In all of gaming history is is difficult to decide on the best fighting game ever. Although the seventh installment of Tekken, an arcade game in Japan, has been released we will have to wait patiently for it to come this way. While we wait let us enjoy the new Street Fighter Game.

Street Fighter 4 has been released on both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. It has been getting great reviews from all of the video game publications as well as the reviews online. But what is even more important than that for the success of a game like this, the fans of the original games love this installment as much as any of the others.

Fans have started falling in love with the characters all over again. All of the original are back with a few new news in their mist. Along with the characters, all their signature moves have followed as well. The series really hit its stride with the second installment of Street Fighter, which was released into arcades in the early nineties. Due to the popularity of the game many sequels were made, as well as live action movies. Although the movies were not a huge success, the gaming fans enjoyed watching their favorite characters and moves come to life.

In Street Fighter 4, the graphics were updated, but kept looking like the original. Original characters look new again, and still retain their classic influence. Anyone who has ever played a Street Fighter game will be able to pick up the controller and get right to action, as the fighting feels new, but somehow familiar.

Another great new and improved feature is that you can play against people from all around the world, via the Internet. It is a great way to test your skills and competitors that challenge you.

Originally on super famicom, Metal Gear has only gotten better with time. Whether you played the original or the NES re-released version, you know just how great this game truly was. After a short period of hiding Metal Gear come back, in 1998, with true video game perfection.

It was in a Playstation release called Metal Gear Solid and would unleash a perfect storm of tactical sneaking missions along with over the top boss fights, with a cinematic movie presentation that the world had never seen and wasnt expecting.

For anyone who has played the Metal Gear games I encourage to try and pick a favorite moment of your game play. i am sure that it is difficult to do when each game is packed with unforgettable moments suitable for a big screen summer blockbuster hit. If you have not played any or all of the Metal gear games, stop reading and get to a store to purchase them.

Each game has built on its predecessor with unparallelled results. I am not going to go into the first three games, they have been covered enough and stand on their own as classics, the newest of the games, Sons of The patriots had a lot to live up to and most gamers had huge expectations of it. I am here to tell you that you have nothing to worry about. This game lives up to the hype and blows that hype right out of the water. It is better than expected and is a true masterpiece. All players of the series know that cut scenes are a big way of storytelling in this series and this game will not disappoint.

The cut scenes are gorgeous and plentiful. They are the best that the series has seen and are among the best in video game history. Some people have complained that there is too much time spent in cut scenes and that it takes away from the involvement in the game. I say nay. It only helps to move the story plot along and the way these stories are developed, sometimes you can use the help to point the story forward. All in all it was a great game and well worth the price of admission.

Well, with all of the excitement building for next months release of the next chapter in the Terminator saga, I thought that it might be a good time to review the other three movies in the series.

The first movie simply titled The Terminator was released in 1984 and almost immediately became a blockbuster hit. It stood out from the pack with its over the top special effects and its time traveling story. It was a huge success and spawned two, and now three sequels as well as a television show on Fox. The first movie was released on VHS and later on DVD. It included a minimal amount of bonus features on its initial DVD release, but would later be re-released as a special addition.

In 1991, the sequel, T2: Judgment Day was released in theatres. Surpassing the first movie, it was an instant hit breaking box office records. It maintained all the greatness from the first movie and expanded on the Terminators lore.

This time putting Arnold in the role of the Terminator, but as guardian of John Connor, it changed up what we were expecting as moviegoers. I remember hearing the rumor of Arnold being a good terminator and couldn’t believe it. I wasnt expecting that kind of twist. The special effects were again over the top and cutting edge. Things that we saw on that screen were unlike anything that had ever been seen before. It was a technological breakthrough and many things have gone on to be standard practice in the years since. The DVD was packed with all the history and special features that you have come to expect. It was all packaged in a cool metallic collectors sleeve. It was truly the way to own the movie.

Ten years later, the dark horse of the franchise, Rise of The Machines was released. It was by Terminators standards a flop, but with almost $400 million is ticket sales, it would have been considered a huge success for any other franchise. The DVD was packed with extras and was just as good as the first two releases. There will undoubtedly be a special Blu-ray version of each of the first three movies and will be even more awesome in all their high definition glory.

Hopefully the newest movie will return the glory to the franchise that I grew up loving.

The State of Video Games 2008

The worldwide video gaming industry held its breath as 2008 came to a close. Did they manage to beat the year prior? With national economies on the brink of failure, companies closing left and right and governments scrambling to recover, could the gaming industry survive, or better yet, grow? Video Games offers a better value in terms of entertainment and that means they are weathering the storm fairly well.

The Land Down Under Australia’s PC gaming sector had a break out year with a 4.2% increase selling $21.2M Australian in December alone. The gaming industry shot up from the previous year with a 47.8% increase coasting to a cool $1.96 billion in sales. Alone software accounted for around $1 billion, a 48.5 percent increase from 2007. Hardware unit sales saw an increase of 36 percent while software saw just over a 42 percent bump. Nintendo certainly led the charge as its hardware platforms boasted 66 percent of hardware sales and they also nailed the top four software slots with Wii Fit, Wii Play w/Remote in first and second. Mario Kart w/Wheel zoomed into third and Mario & Sonic at the Olympics just missed a medal finishing in fourth.

Worldwide Gaming on the PC March saw the release of the 2008 PC Gaming Industry report from the PC Gaming Alliance. All’s well on the PC front they say with the worldwide market soaring skyward with annual revenue hitting $11 billion US. In fact the PC gaming market accounted for more revenue than any hardware from each of the three major console makers (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo). Meanwhile Massive Multiplayer Online games took the reins and tied them to Broadband’s expanding penetration to catapult PC gaming into some pretty high numbers. Digital Distribution sites like Steam, GamersGate and Direct2Drive were used as fuel. Many MMO games are fetching $100 million in annual revenue while the 800 lb gorilla of the industry ? World of Warcraft ? is accounting for about $1 billion annually alone. When you throw in casual game portals, some of which are also raking in a cool $100 million annually you can see why the PC gaming industry is big smiles and hand shakes.

Japan Goes Under While they’re not exactly sliding into the ocean game sales weren’t all that spectacular in the country last year. Playstation 2 saw a massive drop off of 46% and even Nintendo’s DS Touch Generation software took a hit. Meanwhile the newer consoles - Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii ? saw some promising growth and make 2009 look like a good year.

The industry as a whole managed an 11 percent increase year-over-year which is nothing to sneeze at considering the size of the numbers. The US and the UK led the charge even though their economies were failing at the time.

Iron Man - My Pick For the Best Movie of the Summer

Posted on Apr 15, 2009 11:26:09 PM
by Patrick Daniels

Iron, the greatest movie of the summer, is now out on DVD. Some may argue that Batman was truly the greatest movie of the summer but I would have to disagree. Yes, batman was a great movie and definitely the best Batman since 1988, but I believe Iron Man to be a top notch super hero movie. It had everything you would expect form a summer blockbuster, explosions, special effects and more.

Iron man was a background story. It told of Tony Sparks and of Iron Mans beginning. Iron man was not your basic good v evil tale. It was about a man who had learned, through experience, what it was to truly be a man, to believe in something and stand up for it and to not just do the convenient thing that;s best for him.

Tony Stark went from a globetrotting playboy millionaire; to a superhero that is a globetrotting, toned back playboy millionaire. It may be not the biggest transformation of character in the universe; but a pretty good ways for Tony. It was a good thing that he was so rich and could build this super suit for his crime fighting adventure. The action on screen was intense and fast, and looked great on the big screen, but it looks spectacular on the little one as well. The Blu-ray looks unbelievable on a high definition television and all of the action is there to see. There are many extras on the two-disc edition from commentaries from the directors and actors to featurettes showing the making of the movie.

The two disc DVD comes with a seven part documentary on how the film was made, along with numerous extended and deleted scenes. The Blu-ray, however comes with some extras that are not available on DVD such as BD-Live, where you can connect to the Internet and share your own commentary on the movie.

The film itself is one of my favorite super hero movies to date and I for one cant wait for the sequel in a couple of years. I hope that the writing only gets better like in the newly launched Batman series. We will just have to wait and see, but if the first movie was any indication, I am sure we wont have anything to worry about. As long as George Clooney and the writers of his Batman movie stay away.
